Surabhi Das explains her role in ‘Ramayana’
In an interview with Moneycontrol, Surabhi talked about taking part in a big budget film and managing her profile. Speaking to the rumours, he confirmed that he is not playing Urmila. “I don’t play Urmila. I play Shrutakirti, Sita’s younger sister and Shatrughan’s wife,” he said. The actress also admitted that she was devastated after learning that she was featured in one of her favorite Indian films to date. “I’m very grateful to be a part of ‘Ramayana’, even if it’s a small part. When I got the call, I kept wondering if I was selected or if I was blocked for this film. I couldn’t believe it. To be a part of a film with such a big star and such a big scope was meaningless,” he said.
Surabhi Das on trial tour and move to films
Das shared that his journey started with director Mukesh Chhabra’s audition, although it took almost two months for the confirmation to arrive, when he was already shooting for his show Pandya Brothers. “I went to Mukesh Chhabra and gave an audition. About two months later, I got a call that I was closed. After that there were looks and clothes tests. Slowly everything started to sink in. I couldn’t believe that I would be sharing a viewing space with these legends. It’s a wonderful feeling and I thank God,” said Surabhi who was very happy.” Although he has spent recent years watching television, he made it clear that his transition into films was not born out of frustration but a genuine desire to grow as an actor. “I won’t call it a struggle. This is just a situation. We don’t come from families of films where someone can call us one time to work. You have to search and keep searching. Until your project is released, you have to keep reaching out to the directors every time there is a suitable job.”Das added that the transition was successful, mainly because the opportunity continued. “I was already doing Nima Denzongpa after I left Assam. After that I created Pandya Store. Then I decided to leave television, Ramayana happened and now I have two more films. I have been lucky that I have never had a long period of time without working, “he said. Among his upcoming works is a film that took place in 1971, when he took the role of a woman who has a mental and physical condition. He also has a role in the Vikas BahlDil Ka Darwaza Kholna Darling. On the grounds that she found films and OTT more interesting than television, Surabhi explained that she was keen to move beyond repetitive genres. “When you’re doing television, the female lead is often written in the same way. I wanted to explore different perspectives and different personalities. OTT and films give you that space as an actor. The audience can expect characters they’ve never seen before. They will see women who stand up for themselves and others. I’m happy because every project gives me something new,” he said.
Surabhi Das on the difference between regional cinema and Bollywood
Having worked in Assamese cinema and now entering the big box office of Hindi, Surabhi shows that it is the most interesting difference, that Bollywood projects come with a lot of content. “There is a big difference in budgeting. For Ramayana, the sets are huge and there are hundreds of people working every day. Regional films are made on a very limited budget. In regional films, you often have to manage a lot of things yourself. In Bollywood, there is a category for everything, from clothes to styles. The working process is very structured. But action itself does not change. The performance is always there,” he said.
