Maruti Suzuki has announced the installation of a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana, as part of its efforts to improve the use of renewable energy and reduce emissions. The plan complements the 20 MWp solar power plant that was installed on the site in 2025 and was launched as a pilot project connected to the power distribution network within the factory.Battery storage systems are designed to capture excess solar energy generated during factory vacations or periods of low power and restore it when needed. Apart from reducing consumption of renewable energy, Maruti Suzuki says BESS will also help stabilize the grid within the region. In simple terms, this system works like a large rechargeable battery. Instead of allowing excess electricity from solar panels to sit idle when production is off, it stores the energy and releases it when it’s needed the most.
According to the company, BESS has a working life of about 15 years. It is expected to reduce about 54 tons of CO₂ emissions per year by increasing the use of solar energy produced at the Kharkhoda plant. The machine manufacturer also said it is committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions even as production volumes increase. The focus will remain on reducing the carbon footprint and overall output of manufacturing operations.Maruti Suzuki’s natural road is in line with that of its parent company, Opinions of the company Suzuki Motor Corporationwhich has set a short-term target to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by 42 percent by FY2030-31, compared to FY2022-23. Although the battery storage system does not directly affect the vehicles manufactured at the site, it is expected to improve the efficiency of using renewable energy while manufacturing in Kharkhoda. The project also marks another step in Maruti Suzuki’s efforts to make its manufacturing operations more sustainable.Announcing the project, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Maruti Suzuki is very much in line with India’s focus on creating a self-sustaining environment. The installation of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at our Kharkhoda facility is part of this process. With a lifetime of approximately 15 years, BESS will help reduce approximately 54 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. He said, “Going forward, our production ratings will increase from the current levels. However, we are committed to reducing Scope 1 & 2 emissions not only in terms of CO2 intensity but also CO2 emissions in absolute terms of production. Our approach is in line with our parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Environmental vision, which has set an intermediate goal & mission to reduce 2 F 2 e 2 CO2 E2. 2030-31 compared to FY 2022-23
