It wasn’t going to be easy, but it was a game. We talked a lot about what her character, Mary Jane, goes through. I told her exactly what that situation does to a person’s body and psyche. ‘Udta Punjab’ Controversy
Although “Udta Punjab” became one of the most controversial films of its time, Chaubey said that creating controversy was not the aim of the project.“I think so, although it wasn’t my intention to make a controversial film. I just wanted to make a fun and interesting film and for the story to reach all people.”The film created an international debate because of its depiction of drug abuse and the real-life situation of the people of Punjab. However, according to Chaubey, the main goal was to tell an interesting story while highlighting a larger issue.How did Shahid Kapoor become Tommy Singh?One of the most talked about aspects of the film was Shahid Kapoor’s transformation into music legend Tommy Singh. Chaubey revealed that the character evolved slowly and drew inspiration from multiple sources rather than one specific character.“Tommy was based on a lot of people. He later evolved into the original character. I have to credit Shahid for recreating the character. He also brought his thoughts and feelings to create the persona.”The director also recalled that he was surprised by Shahid’s enthusiasm at that time.“He really liked the script and immediately said yes. I was surprised. He told me that he saw it as a great opportunity. He said, ‘How many times do I have to play someone as crazy as this?’
Abhishek Chaubey responds to criticism about Punjab’s image
After its release, ‘Udta Punjab’ drew criticism from some people for portraying the government in a negative light. Chaubey, however, insisted that the film came from a place of concern rather than judgement.“If we don’t talk about our problems honestly and openly, how can we hope to solve them? These attitudes must change. Our intention was not to tarnish any image. We came from a place of love and compassion.”The filmmaker believes that cinema can help promote dialogue about social issues.
