Acclaimed British songwriter Asteryth Sloane, whose music was performed at various concert venues across the UK, has died. Sloane was 26 years old at the time of her passing. Sloane’s music has been celebrated and performed by some of the biggest bands in the UK, including VOCES8, the Paraorchestra, the BBC Singers and the BBC Concert Orchestra, to name but a few.
Asteryth Sloane dies at the age of 26
The Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Philharmonic Society took to their Instagram accounts to share the news of his death with the world. Sharing their photo in a post, the RNCM wrote, “We are deeply saddened to learn that songwriter and RNCM alum Asteryth Sloane has passed away at the age of 26.” The post also detailed their education and degree, and discussed their “unique methods and skills.“The post also reads, “Asteryth’s music is known for its responses to the beauty and fragility of the living Earth, as well as themes of humanity and spirituality. Their musical work focuses on the power of listening to bring about intimate and moral relationships with sound, as well as the freedom of sound and sound sources. Recently, Asteryth is trained in healing techniques. We send our condolences to Asteryth’s family and friends. “ RPS also wrote about his passing, writing, “A blind composer with unique technique and verve, we pay tribute to Asteryth’s talent, and encourage music lovers to continue to listen and play Asteryth’s music, to ensure that it continues to resonate.”

After the article was shared online, many people responded to remember the author. One social media user said, “This is devastating news… Asteryth was a great friend and musician, a great artist and thinker, an inspiration to all of us who knew him. Sending love to his family and friends,” while another person shared, “I remember when we were all in the first year and saw their work (amazing), talking to them really helped me build my confidence as a songwriter. Very devastating news, sending my thoughts to anyone affected by this. “A third person added, “The world has been destroyed. I worked with Asteryth a lot throughout my master’s time and got to know them through their music and work. A very special bean whose music will be there,” while another netizen said, “We can’t begin to say how much this stings. Asteryth was a rare person; kind to a fault, thoughtful… A talented musician and a passionate supporter.“

One of his mentors, Tom Coult, also remembered working with him and commented, “I taught Asteryth when he was on the young Britten Sinfonia scheme as a teenager. A wonderful poetic mind, thoughtful, sincere, full of emotion and beauty. Very sad.”

The singer became well known for her award-winning music, and despite being blinded at the age of two, she continued to have a successful career. Sloane has received many honors for their work, including the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year in 2016, the top category of the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ competition in 2018 for their piece ‘Elegy for Aylan’, and a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society to record the 5th anniversary of Classic FM.Their writings often explore themes of nature, spirituality, philosophy, and humanity. Beyond his musical talents, Sloane also dabbled in other streams and was a noted researcher and psychologist.He graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Composition) with the highest honors, and also holds a Master’s in Composition and Musicology. Sloane also holds an MSc in Counseling and Psychotherapy from Keele University and was a registered researcher for a PHD in Poetry and Ecolinguistics at the University of Gloucestershire.
