DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand has become the sixth fully literate state in the country under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) scheme, marking a major milestone in its adult education journey. Officials said the state gained the status after meeting the adult literacy benchmarks set by the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Union Ministry of Education.They said the state achieved an important milestone after meeting the adult literacy benchmarks set by the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Federal Ministry of Education.Thereafter, Governor of Uttarakhand Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmeet Singh approved the proposal and declared the state fully literate.Before Uttarakhand, five other states – Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim – had achieved full literacy.chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the achievement as a “milestone” for the state.He said the active participation of the people and the sustained efforts of the government played a key role in achieving this feat.Congratulating the people of India, Dhami said, “This collective effort will help achieve the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047. Furthermore, the government will continue to go all out to ensure that every citizen acquires digital literacy, financial literacy, continuing education and life skills.” The state cabinet had approved the proposal to declare universal literacy in Uttarakhand on June 19.According to officials, the literacy rate in Uttarakhand is currently over 98%.
