Former Romanian midfielder Gabriel Muresan died at the age of 44 after drowning in a lake near Apold, the city where he was mayor, according to a report from the AP news agency. Muresan, who became mayor in 2020, was remembered for his football career and his service to the local community. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed the death of the former midfielder, who represented Romania nine times between 2007 and 2011, including in World Cup and European Championship qualification.“The Romanian Football Federation sends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and everyone who knew Gabriel Muresan,” it said.The local authority of Apold also paid tribute, describing Muresan as “a devoted servant of our community”, recognizing his contribution as mayor.Muresan enjoyed the best spell of his playing career with Cluj, helping the club win three Romanian league titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012. During his six seasons with the club, Cluj also lifted three domestic cups.He also gained valuable experience in the UEFA Champions Leagueplaying in three group stage campaigns against top European clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Rome.
