The actor, who is known for his passion for sustainability and innovative solutions, has transformed an empty field near Palani in Tamil Nadu into a thriving coconut plantation through a unique project of eco-friendly agriculture.The project, which Madhavan carried out five years before it was closed by his cousin Subayogan, has now become a good example of how an abandoned place can be revived using modern, natural and traditional methods.
R Madhavan’s soil revitalization project makes the environment self-sustaining
Madhavan and Subayogan bought dry land near Palani and began experimenting with sustainable farming methods. For about three and a half years, the land was transformed into a green field full of young coconut trees that do not mix together producing sweet water coconuts.The revival also brought signs of a healthy ecosystem, with earthworms and native birds returning to the area.The project also aims to support local farmers. Some of the crops produced in the plantation were sold below the market price, helping the farmers to increase their income through coconut cultivation and the sale of seedlings.
‘Every learning has been invaluable’: Madhavan on a farming journey
In 2020, Madhavan shared his experience and described it as one of the most fulfilling projects of his life.“It was great to see the country being revived and given what it originally meant. From preparing the soil with the right mulch to putting the right type of fish in the well – every learning has been valuable and worthwhile,” said Mumbai Mirror.The actor said the success of the project inspired him to explore similar genres in India and around the world.“It has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of our lives. It was great to see the country being renovated and given what it should have been in the first place,” he said.
Madhavan shares a snapshot of his love for gardening
Madhavan’s interest in living a balanced life is often reflected in his social media. In the closing season of 2020, when many people try new hobbies, the actor gave fans a glimpse of his suburban garden in Mumbai, where he grows vegetables and fruits.His walled garden had zucchini, beans, canes and papayas. He also shared a video showing cherries growing at his home, writing, “Mumbai Terrace has a new fruit.”Beyond gardening, Madhavan has shown frequent interest in technology related to sustainable development and environmental awareness.
