The National Medical Council (NMC) has decided to discontinue postgraduate diploma medical courses across India, paving the way for a complete shift in junior medical education to MD and MSc courses. Admission to PG diploma courses will be conducted for the last session in 2026-27 and thereafter, there will be no admissions to these courses.This was the beginning of a major shift in specialist medical education. According to an official notification from the Board, the academic year 2026-27 will mark the end of admissions to the Postgraduate Diploma programme. Thereafter, admission to PG diploma courses will no longer be allowed in the academic year 2027-28.This is one of many initiatives to create a more coherent system of postgraduate medical education. By moving entirely towards degree-based postsecondary education, NMC hopes to improve academic standards.
Major changes in graduate medical education
Postgraduate diploma courses have been a model for doctors to obtain professional training for decades. However, the NMC has taken a decision stipulating which degree courses must be used as the primary means of obtaining further training in medicine.According to the committee, many medical schools already have the capacity to offer MD/MS programs due to infrastructure, manpower, patients, and clinical facilities. Hence, it becomes easy for the institute to convert its diploma seats into degree seats.It is believed that this change will allow institutions to better utilize resources while providing professional training.
Medical College can convert diploma seats
To ensure a smooth transition, NMC is allowing medical colleges currently offering diploma courses to apply for conversion of these seats into corresponding MD or MS programmes.Applications will be processed through the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), one of the key regulatory bodies under the NMC. Universities will be required to submit applications through an online system. The commission said a dedicated application portal and detailed timetable will be announced separately.The conversion process is expected to help institutions upgrade their academic offerings without requiring an entirely new framework.
