However, unlike other dance projects, ‘Confessions II’ weaves personal stories together with the dancefloor aesthetic that defines Madonna’s art.The album features a duet between Madonna and her daughter Lourdes, known as Lola, marking the first time they recorded together. According to Madonna, the collaboration came about after her daughter approached her with the idea, while she was away working with her mother on projects.“He approached me. He didn’t hesitate to work with me. He doesn’t want it to be known that my daughter is taking advantage of him,” Madonna told Norton. She went on to explain how her 29-year-old daughter has struggled with the expectations and stereotypes surrounding her as the child of a world celebrity.“He’s been very upright, he’s doing his job, and I have a lot of respect for him,” Madonna said. “But then one day he came to me and said, ‘You know what? I’m holding on to something, and maybe it’s a kind of … I don’t want to say anger … maybe anger? Because at the end of the day he didn’t ask for this life.”
How ‘Confessions II’ addresses Madonna’s relationship with dance
One of the album’s opening tracks, ‘One Step Away’, features lyrics that Madonna has described as a manifesto for all of history. The song includes a passage about the dancefloor serving as a space and ritual where movement replaces language. According to its creator, Stuart Price, the word came out of an unexpected moment of spontaneous creativity.Price explained to Norton how the song came about. “When she played the instrument at the end of the session, Madonna said, ‘Just change the microphone, I think I have an idea,'” Price said. “All these words are heard in one consciousness. However, their relationship took a turn for the worse when Madonna chose Jamie King as a tour guide for her Drowned World tour, and it was further strained when Christopher published the full album in 2008.

Speaking to Norton, Madonna explained how the reconciliation began. “He was sick and he came to me and said, ‘I need your help.’ I felt so relieved. It was such a heavy weight off my back, such a weight that was lifted, a burden that I could put down to be in the same room with him and hold his hand even when he was dying and say, ‘I love you and I forgive you,’ ” she reflected.The reconciliation inspired Madonna to write the song ‘Fragile’, which focuses on their childhood. According to Madonna, the song came together when Christopher called her in the studio. “He was in a lot of pain, on the phone, and he wasn’t in a good place. I knew it was close to the end. And then I went upstairs and wrote a song,” he said.
