Joe Manganiello plans to share more about the serious health crisis that has consumed the past decade of his life. The 49-year-old actor has revealed that his upcoming memoir, ‘Bloodlines’, will tell the story of a deep and long-standing ordeal that he hid from the public eye.Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, Manganiello described the moment as “the most difficult time of my life,” while admitting that the experience also changed her in unexpected ways. The actor explained what inspired him to write this chapter of his life in his memoir, which is due to be published on October 16.

According to the book, Manganiello’s health began to deteriorate suddenly and without warning when he was struck by what he describes as an “autoimmune disease” that affects several systems in his body. The medical problem affected his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs and digestive system, creating difficulties and challenges for both the actor and the medical professionals trying to help him.

The seven-year battle that followed left Manganiello “suffering from chronic pain” and requiring extensive medical attention. Most impressively, he underwent what the synopsis described as “life-saving amputation” a procedure that proved necessary for his survival despite the difficulty of such a step. Throughout this time, doctors struggled to identify the cause of his illness or provide a clear explanation for the mysterious symptoms he was experiencing.
The actor’s thoughts on his medical journey
Considering the situation, Manganiello found it very difficult and understandable. “I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, and my biggest adventure,” he said of the seven-year challenge.The actress went on to explain how the process of documenting her experiences through writing helped her recovery and her thoughts. “The process of writing this book gave me the gift of observation that helped me see that my suffering was a coconut from which I could emerge transformed,” he said. He said he hopes that sharing his journey can help others who are facing their own health problems. “I hope that my experiences on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing can be found for them on the other side of whatever they are struggling with,” he continued.

Bigger Themes in ‘Bloodlines’

According to the book’s synopsis, the work will examine “heritage, masculinity, faith, ambition, and what we do to survive.” The problem also led Manganiello to research his parents and family history, which led to what he described as “a world-wide curiosity” that revealed the connection between his genetic problems and his family’s deep history.
