Himachal Pradesh directs all government schools to remain open on August 15 to celebrate Independence Day
The Directorate of School Education of Himachal Pradesh has directed all government schools to continue operations on August 15, 2026 to mark Independence Day through flag hoisting, cultural events and patriotic activities. Schools have also been directed to participate in official celebrations at district, divisional and Tehsil headquarters and authorities have been ordered to ensure strict implementation of these guidelines.

Government schools in Himachal Pradesh will remain open on August 15, 2026 as the state government has directed educational institutions to organize Independence Day celebrations with universal participation. The Directorate of School Education directed schools to conduct flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs and other patriotic activities while ensuring that national festivals are celebrated with dignity, discipline and enthusiasm.The directive aims to ensure uniform celebration of Independence Day in all public schools and enhance student participation in national celebrations.

Board issues statewide directive for Independence Day celebrations

According to an official order issued by the Directorate of School Education on July 29, all deputy directors (primary and higher education) and government high school principals have been directed to make necessary arrangements for Independence Day celebrations.The order emphasizes that every public school in the state must organize activities that reflect the importance of national events. Schools are asked to celebrate the day with patriotic fervor while maintaining the decorum associated with the event.

Flag hoisting, cultural programs and patriotic activities must be conducted

As per the instructions, each public school will organize:

  • Flag raising ceremony
  • Patriotic cultural program
  • Activities that highlighted India’s freedom struggle
  • Other activities promoting national unity and constitutional values

The government wants schools to actively engage students and teachers in these projects to commemorate the sacrifices made by Indian freedom fighters.

Directs district education officers to ensure compliance

The directorate has also directed district education officers to circulate detailed guidelines among schools under their respective jurisdictions.Officials have been asked to ensure that all public schools remain open on August 15 and that celebrations take place in accordance with official instructions. The order requires strict compliance at all administrative levels.

School participation in official district and tehsil functions

In addition to organizing events on campus, educational institutions are directed to participate in official Independence Day events at the following locations:

  • district headquarters
  • divisional headquarters
  • Tahir Headquarters

Independence Day 2026: India commemorates 79 years of freedom

India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2026.
