The goal capped another remarkable night for the 27-year-old, who was making his 100th appearance for France and had already entered the match carrying huge momentum following his brace against Senegal in the opening group game.France continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the remainder of the first half. Continued storm activity repeatedly reset the countdown clock, resulting in a significant delay of 130 minutes.The second half started at 8:00 pm local time, more than two hours after the players had initially left the field.
France picks up where they left off
Any concern that the long stoppage might disrupt France’s rhythm disappeared almost immediately after the restart.Just nine minutes into the second half, Dembele stepped forward and capitalized on uncertainty in the Iraqi defense before sending a low ball across the six-yard box. Mbappe reacted first, getting into the center to stab the finish into the bottom corner for his second goal of the night and France’s second of the evening.

The strike also enhanced an already historic occasion for the France captain. His first game took him to 15 World Cup goals, while his second took him to 16 for his World Cup career.France’s third goal came in the 66th minute through Dembele, who capped an excellent individual display with his first goal at a major international tournament. Once again Olise was involved, releasing the winger into space on the right. Dembele beat two defenders with a sudden change of direction before driving a powerful finish into the far bottom corner beyond Basil.

France dominates the numbers and the group
The final statistics reflected France’s control throughout the evening. Les Bleus finished with 56 percent of possession, registered 19 shots compared to Iraq’s four and limited Graham Arnold’s side to zero efforts on target. France completed passes with an impressive 91 percent accuracy, while Iraq finished with an 86 percent completion rate despite going long periods without the ball.France also won four corners to Iraq’s two and constantly forcing the Lions of Mesopotamia into a reactive defensive shape.The win sends France top of Group I with six points from two games and confirms their place in the knockout rounds with one match remaining.
