NEW DELHI: India’s boxing contingent produced a perfect five-in-five performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with Narender Berwal joining Ankush Yadav, Sakshi Choudhary, Arundhati Choudhary and Sachin Siwach in the semi-finals after a memorable day in Glasgow.The five wins ensured that every Indian boxer who stepped into the ring on Wednesday advanced to the last four, taking India’s total number of semi-finalists in boxing to nine.The achievement has already surpassed India’s boxing medal tally at Birmingham 2022, where the country had finished with seven medals – three gold, one silver and three bronze.With the nine semi-final berths, India is now assured of at least nine bronze medals in the Glasgow boxing competition.
Sakshi, Arundhati lead India’s winning start
The winning run started with Sakshi Choudhary, who put in a dominant performance against Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers in the women’s 51kg quarter-finals.Sakshi controlled the bout from the opening bell, using her reach advantage and sharp combinations to keep Fryers at bay before securing a 5-0 unanimous victory.“Her strategy was to fight from close range and she kept clinching. Mine was to box from long distance which is my forte,” Sakshi told PTI after the bout.The Irish boxer tried to trouble Sakshi with aggressive attacks, but the Indian remained composed, keeping his distance and responding with cleaner punches.Later, Arundhati Choudhary faced a tougher challenge against New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson in the women’s 70kg quarterfinals. After a tight contest, Arundhati held her nerve to secure a 3-1 win and a place in the semi-finals.
Siwach, Ankush and Narender complete India’s perfect day
Former world youth champion Sachin Siwach continued India’s strong showing by overcoming Botswana’s Treasure Moremi in the men’s 60kg quarter-finals.The world no. 5 Indian produced a composed performance, winning the bout 5-0 by unanimous decision after dominating all five judges scorecards.In the men’s 80kg quarter-finals, Ankush Yadav extended India’s winning streak with another commanding performance. Last year’s World Boxing Cup Final silver medalist defeated Seychelles’ Jade Micock 5-0 to book her semi-final.Ankush’s speed, movement and superior combinations proved too much for his opponent as he maintained control throughout the contest.The latest Indian boxer to complete the five-in-five breakthrough was Narender Berwal, who beat Samoa’s Michael Seko in a dramatic men’s 90+kg quarter-final.In a contest full of referee interventions and two point deductions against the Indian, Berwal showed resilience. He forced the counts to stand twice, including in the decisive final round, to beat Seko 3-2 on a split decision.With nine boxers now guaranteed medals, India has already created history in Glasgow.
