A brilliant American textbook inspired him—but also exposed a problem
Harish Chandra Verma was born on April 3, 1952, in Darbhanga, Bihar, and grew up in a family that valued education very much. His father was a school teacher, and Verma developed an early interest in science.After completing the B.A. After graduating from Patna Science College, he went on to obtain his Master’s degree. and Ph.D. in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.In 1980, he returned to Patna Science College as a lecturer. Every day, he teaches undergraduate students using the internationally renowned Resnick and Halliday physics textbooks.He admired the book’s scientific depth and clarity. But something kept bothering him.Many bright students have difficulty understanding examples, language, and explanatory styles. The classroom environment and life experiences assumed by textbooks are very different from those of students from small towns and villages across India.The problem is not intelligence.The problem is communication.
He did not translate the book. He built one from scratch.
Instead of complaining about the lack of suitable textbooks, Verma decided to create one of his own.Years of classroom teaching helped him understand exactly where Indian students were confused, what misunderstandings they had and how to explain concepts more naturally.The result was Concepts of Physics, first published in 1992.Unlike many textbooks that focus on formulas, HC Verma encourages students to ask why before learning how to do something.Simple language. From Patna to IIT Kanpur
In 1994, Verma joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty member, where he spent more than two decades teaching and researching in experimental nuclear physics.In addition to teaching, he has made significant contributions to his field by publishing 139 research papers.But even as a professor at one of India’s top engineering institutions, he never lost sight of his original intention – to make physics more accessible to the average student.Many of his lectures, demonstrations and classroom courses continue to be freely available online to benefit students outside IIT Kanpur.
Making physics affordable and fun
HC Verma believes science should not depend on expensive laboratory equipment.To make physics accessible to every classroom, he developed more than 600 low-cost physics experiments using everyday materials that teachers can easily replicate.In 2011, he helped establish the National Anveshika Network of India (NANI) under the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT).The initiative encourages hands-on science learning and now supports learning centers across the country to help teachers make physics more interactive and fun.
Education beyond the classroom
Even after retiring from IIT Kanpur in 2017, Verma chose to continue her studies.Instead, he devoted more time to Shiksha Sopan, an educational program he co-founded near the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur campus.The organization supports children from economically disadvantaged families by providing academic assistance, mentoring and learning opportunities. Over the years, hundreds of students and families have benefited.His belief has always been simple: quality education should reach those who need it most.
Padma Shri—and the gratitude of millions
In 2021, the Government of India awarded Harish Chandra Verma the Medal Padma Shrirecognizing his great contribution to physics education.But perhaps his greatest award cannot be measured in medals or honors.Every year, thousands of students preparing for JEE, NEET and other competitive exams continue to learn physics from the books he wrote more than three decades ago.For many people, “HCV” is more than just the author’s name.It represents the moment when difficult physics problems finally start to make sense.This may be his greatest legacy—he didn’t just teach equations; he taught math.
