USA vs Belgium Live Score, FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16: Balogun returns as hosts chase first quarter-final since 2002

The United States and Belgium meet at Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field) in one of the signature ties of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, with a quarter-final meeting against Spain awaiting the winner. While the matchup already has significant sporting importance, the build-up has been dominated by one of the biggest controversies of the tournament involving US striker Folarin Balogun.

The Americans arrived full of confidence after topping Group D with wins over Paraguay and Australia, before narrowly losing to Turkey after rotating much of their opening game. They immediately responded in the Round of 32, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to continue an encouraging campaign under Mauricio Pochettino, who is trying to lead the United States to their first World Cup quarter-final since 2002.

Belgium’s path was much less direct. The Red Devils opened with draws against Egypt and Iran before thrashing New Zealand 5-1 to advance from Group G. Their round-of-32 meeting with Senegal produced one of the most dramatic contests of the tournament, as Rudi Garcia’s side came back from two goals down at the end of regulation before completing an extraordinary 3-2 extra-time victory.

However, attention has shifted away from football following FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic one-match ban. The striker was sent off during the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but FIFA later invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code to suspend the ban for a year, allowing him to remain available for the Belgium match. The decision sparked immediate criticism from Belgium, whose football federation filed a protest that FIFA rejected, while Garcia described the situation as difficult to understand.

Balogun’s availability is particularly significant given his importance to the American attack. The forward scored three goals during the tournament, while Christian Pulisic continues to lead the team creatively alongside midfielders Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie. Belgium, meanwhile, still possess one of the deepest squads in the competition, with Kevin De Bruyne orchestrating the attacks behind Romelu Lukaku, while Jeremy Doku, Youri Tielemans and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois provide additional elite experience.

History also favors Belgium. The Europeans have won six of the last seven meetings between the nations, including a 5-2 friendly victory earlier this year. The most memorable encounter came at the 2014 World Cup, when Belgium defeated the United States 2-1 after extra time, despite Tim Howard producing one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the tournament.

The Americans are hoping that the home support in Seattle will finally help them reverse this trend. Meanwhile, Belgium aims to prove it remains among the world’s elite after rebuilding beyond its celebrated Golden Generation. With a place in the last eight on the line and controversy already surrounding the match before kickoff, the stage is set for one of the defining encounters of the Round of 16.
