The Delhi High Court is expected to announce its decision on Friday on the complaint filed by Bollywood actors Rajpal Yadav and others are challenging their conviction and sentence in several check cases.According to a notice published on the website of the Delhi High Court, a single judge of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma will deliver a verdict on July 10 in a series of criminal complaints and judicial reviews filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The judge reserves the judgment
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma reserved judgment in the case on April 2, after the last attempt failed despite the Supreme Court’s intervention. At the meeting, the actor was impressed with his views as he argued against his demands. The HC expressed displeasure with Yadav’s performance in repaying the outstanding loans. At one point, he said, “I’m not getting my answers. The project said one thing and now you’re saying another,” indicating concern and inconsistency in the claims made on the actor’s behalf.Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Avneet Singh Sikka said that Yadav had already accepted his sentence and could not avoid the case. He said that the request that was changed in 2024 was accompanied by a delay of 1,894 days and did not give sufficient reasons to excuse. Sikka also said that the end of the decision does not solve the financial problem caused by dishonored cheques.
Rajpal Yadav denies Rs 6 crore settlement
During the meeting, the HC repeatedly tried to reach an amicable settlement. On the opinion of the Court, the plaintiff agreed to accept the sum of Rs.6 crore as full and final judgment. However, Yadav, who appeared on the last day of the trial, rejected the plea and told the Court that he had already lost a lot of money. He said that he was forced to sell his land and had already paid a lot of money. The court also suggested a reasonable payment of ₹3 crore within a fixed period, clarifying that it was only a judicial opinion and not a final decision. Despite these efforts, the parties did not agree. The Supreme Court also warned all sides about the way the case is being conducted, and said, “Don’t think that the judge is weak if the judge is doing you good,” while also saying that the time of the judge is being wasted.
Rajpal Yadav moved the adjournment order
The actor has been granted an extended stay by the Delhi High Court, which continued to function during the stay of proceedings. The petitions were filed by Mr. Rajpal Yadav and another respondent M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd. and another, challenging the orders passed by the trial court in several contempt cases.
Rajpal Yadav has already paid Rs 4.25 crore
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had extended a temporary stay on the sentence awarded to Rajpal Yadav after observing that the actor had already paid the petitioner’s company. In the case, the judge presiding over Yadav told the Delhi High Court that around Rs 4.25 crore had already been paid to M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd., including Rs 25 lakh documents were submitted to the court. Noting that the actor had already paid a huge amount, Justice Sharma said verbally that the court did not want to send him back to jail at that time. The Delhi High Court also refused to vacate its earlier order staying Yadav’s sentence despite the petition filed by the petitioner to stay the relief.“He is not running away. He is still here… If money is to come to you, it will come,” the Delhi High Court observed, explaining that the player must respect the settlement or challenge the case on his own grounds.
The Delhi High Court has ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the Jail Superintendent
Earlier, in February, the Delhi High Court had ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the concerned Jail Superintendent after he had scoffed at his failure to fulfill his promises despite being given many opportunities.Justice Sharma also observed that despite the “huge compensation”, the actor had repeatedly violated the terms of the court order and had failed to comply with the payment deadlines set from time to time.Later, the actor was granted a suspended sentence after paying part of the fine, which allowed him to be released from prison while the Supreme Court continues to hear the main appeal. Rajpal Yadav was found guilty and sentenced in 2024 on several counts of defamation under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
