The United States gradually settled down after a difficult opening and enjoyed longer periods of possession, eventually finishing the match with 57 percent of the ball and an impressive passing accuracy of 89 percent compared to Belgium’s 83 percent. However, despite possession circulating effectively, clear-cut opportunities remained scarce against Belgium’s organized defensive shape.Their equalizer came in the 31st minute from a lucky but well-earned set piece. After Balogun was fouled just outside the penalty area, Malik Tillman rose on the free-kick and drove a powerful effort towards the goal. The strike cannoned into the Belgian wall before taking a heavy deflection that completely missed Thibaut Courtois, leaving the goalkeeper caught as the ball rolled into the opposite corner to make it 1-1.

Any momentum generated by the equalizer disappeared almost immediately.Belgium responded within two minutes with a move that perfectly illustrated their offensive quality. Trossard found space on the left flank and delivered an inviting looping cross into the penalty area. De Ketelaere got away from his marker, met the delivery with a perfectly timed run and fed a close-range header past Freese to restore Belgium’s lead to 2-1. The swift response stunned the Seattle crowd and left Mauricio Pochettino visibly frustrated on the touchline after seeing his side concede almost immediately after their equaliser.

Freese’s mistake is decisive as Belgium punish every mistake
The United States tried to start the second half with more urgency, pushing Christian Pulisic and Balogun further forward in search of another equalizer. Belgium, however, remained composed defensively as they continued to threaten whenever they went through quickly.The contest was effectively decided in the 57th minute after a catastrophic defensive mistake.A long Belgian ball over the top looked relatively harmless, but confusion between the American defense and goalkeeper Matt Freese proved costly. Freese rushed well outside his penalty area with the intention of clearing the danger before hesitating under pressure from De Ketelaere. The loose ball fell gently for substitute Hans Vanaken, who instantly recognized the goal without a keeper and calmly slotted a long-range finish into the empty net. Veteran defender Tim Ream desperately sprinted back and threw in a sliding attempt to prevent the goal, but the ball crossed the line comfortably to give Belgium a 3-1 lead.

The clash became even more damaging when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off after a collision with Tielemans, further reducing the Americans’ attacking threat during the closing stages.Pochettino’s team continued to look for a way back into the competition despite the deficit. Sebastian Berhalter went close with a powerful long-range shot that went just wide, while Balogun finally found space behind the Belgium defense after being released by a superb pass. Driving in from a tight angle, the striker tried to beat Courtois at his near post, but the towering Belgian goalkeeper stood firm and produced another important save to deny the hosts any hope of a late comeback.The efficiency of Belgium’s attack remained the defining difference between the two sides. Belgium finished the evening without receiving a single booking, while the United States picked up two yellow cards during a frustrating night in Seattle. Ultimately, possession stats counted for little as Belgium showed ruthless efficiency in both penalty areas, punishing every major American error to end the co-hosts’ World Cup campaign.The win sends the Red Devils into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles on July 10.
