The alleged leak of Maharashtra’s Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 question paper triggered a political storm on Monday, with opposition parties attacking the state government over repeated exam leaks and demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. The issue disrupted the proceedings of the Maharashtra Assembly and Legislative Council. Opposition members caused an uproar in parliament, causing the House of Representatives to adjourn for 30 minutes. They also called for the resignation of school education director Dadda Booth. In response to the allegations, Booth said he would make a detailed statement on the matter later in the day. He said the government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and more than four teams are investigating the case.“The government’s position is to take strict action in this matter. A decision will also be taken on how these exams will be conducted in a transparent manner,” Booth said. The issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve, who questioned why the government failed to prevent another document leak despite the recent NEET-UG controversy.“There are irregularities in crores of rupees and leaks of question papers are becoming more frequent,” he claimed, adding, “If the exams cannot be held properly, then the education minister should resign.”Congress leader Sat Patil said it was the government’s responsibility to ensure that there were no errors in the exams. His party colleague Jayant Asgaonkar has demanded a CBI probe, while Dhiraj Lingade has claimed that the country’s education system has “completely collapsed”. NCP (SP) leader Arun Lad said document leaks have become common as the state lacks strict laws to prevent it.In Parliament, the opposition sought to suspend question time to discuss the TET document leak. Speaker Rahul Narvekar, however, rejected the request, saying the House was scheduled to discuss the supplementary demands and the opposition did not follow the prescribed procedure of suspending question hour.Congress leader Vijay Wadetiwar accused the government of failing the expectations of students and teachers.“Thousands of students and teachers spend years trying to prepare for these exams. However, the constant leakage of paper completely washed away their hard work. The government must explain to the people of Maharashtra why it has repeatedly failed to conduct these exams transparently,” he said.Wadtiwar called for a thorough investigation into the leak and said investigators should examine the entire chain, including paper setters, corporate entities and private companies involved in the checks. Referring to the three people who have been arrested, he claimed that links to other states indicated inter-state fraud. The opposition said the government’s response lacked a clear strategy to prevent future leaks. Not satisfied with the minister’s reply, Maha Vikas Aghadi members walked out from the Assembly in protest. The Maharashtra TET exam 2026 was postponed on Saturday, a day before it was scheduled to be held, after Thane police discovered that some question papers had been leaked. Three people have been arrested so far.Following the incident, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered the formation of a Security Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Thane Joint Commissioner of Police Panjabrao Ugale to investigate the document leak.
