As the group stage of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its finale, attention turns to one of the tournament’s most intriguing qualification battles – the race between the third-ranked teams for a place in the Round of 32.For the first time in the history of the World Cup, 48 teams were divided into 12 groups of four. While the top two teams from each group will automatically advance to the knockout stage, they won’t be alone. The eight best third-placed teams in all 12 groups will also advance, completing the 32-team knockout bracket.This means that 24 teams will qualify directly by finishing in the top two of their groups, while a further eight will secure their places through third place. The other four teams in third place, along with the bottom 12 sides, will be eliminated.
The race for the elimination spots is heating up
Through Wednesday’s games, 13 teams had already sealed qualification for the Round of 32.Confirmed group winners so far include Mexico (Group A), Switzerland (Group B), Brazil (Group C), United States (Group D), Germany (Group E) and Argentina (Group J).France, Norway, Canada, Morocco, Colombia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and South Africa have also secured their places in the next round.On the other hand, the Czech Republic, Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Qatar and Panama have already been eliminated before the last round of group matches.With 13 teams through and seven out, 28 teams remain in contention for the remaining 19 knockout stage spots.
How are the best teams ranked third?
Once all the group stage matches are over, FIFA will compare the records of the 12 teams that finished third in their respective groups.The classification criteria are applied in the following order:
- 1. The greatest number of points obtained in all the matches of the group.
- 2. Superior goal difference in all group games.
- 3. The greatest number of goals scored in all the games of the group.
- 4. The highest classification of team conduct, determined by yellow and red cards received by players and team officials.
- 5. The highest position in the most recent FIFA World Ranking.
The top eight teams in this ranking will advance to the Round of 32, while the remaining four third-placed teams will be sent home.
Crucial matches still to come
Several decisive matches remain before the elimination picture becomes clear. Australia and Paraguay will meet in a virtual clash, while the winners of Japan vs Sweden and Austria vs Algeria will secure passage to the next round. Cape Verde can make history by reaching the knockouts with a win over Saudi Arabia, while Colombia and Portugal will battle it out for top spot in Group K.On Sunday morning (in India), the identities of all 32 teams in the knockout phase will finally be known.
