India’s Gulveer Singh created history by winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Indian to finish on the podium in the event. His success sparked celebrations in his village, with family members expressing pride in his achievement.His mother, Laxmi, recalled how Gulveer’s journey began in the fields before he rose to the international stage. She said: “Gulveer ran in the fields; that is how he brought glory to our name… He is doing well and aspires to achieve even more… I am happy; that my son will continue to bring glory to our country.”Gulveer’s wife Babita said the silver medal had brought pride to her district and the country. She added: “My husband completed the race yesterday. He secured the second place and brought honor to our district and the country; everyone at home is happy that he brought such pride to the nation… There is a very joyful atmosphere in the country, and everyone is happy to see this.”

The Army athlete clocked 27:49.78 in the final, staying with the leading pack before producing a strong sprint in the final lap to finish behind Australia’s Ky Robinson. Gulveer’s silver is India’s first medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games and also highlights the country’s growing success in long-distance athletics.
