Childhood dream takes unexpected turn
Deepak Baghel hails from the Chambal district of Madhya Pradesh. He completed his schooling in Gwalior and then graduated from Jiwaji University.Interestingly, becoming a civil servant was never his childhood ambition.After completing Class 12, he successfully qualified the Service Selection Board (SSB) and was expected to join the Indian Navy. Made it to the interview twice but missed the final list
Many UPSC candidates spend years trying to qualify to sit for the preliminary examination.Deepak goes further.In his first attempt in 2023, he passed the preliminary examination, the main examination, and passed the personality test. Despite being so close, he was nowhere near the final list of merits.The following year brought nearly identical results.Enter the interview stage again.His name once again disappeared from the final list.For many candidates, two consecutive disappointments in the final stages are enough to give up on their dreams.Deepak chose a different path.
A change in strategy transformed his preparations

Success does not depend on studying in Delhi
Like many UPSC aspirants, Deepak initially wondered whether moving to Delhi would improve his chances of success.Over time, his views changed.Starting from Gwalior, he realized that location alone does not determine the outcome.Consistency, rigorous preparation, conceptual clarity and confidence are more important than the city in which one studies, he said.His journey serves as an inspiring example to thousands of aspirants from small towns across India.
AIR 602 – But the journey continues
Deepak’s persistence finally paid off and he secured AIR 602 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025.For many candidates, passing the exam itself represents the realization of a lifelong dream.However, Deepak continued to prepare for a bigger goal – to obtain a grade that would enable him to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).His determination reflects the same mindset that helped him bounce back from repeated setbacks.
