Over the weekend, the high-profile version of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ took place on popular social media sites. It soon went viral, garnering millions of views within hours. The film, which was shot on IMAX cameras by Nolan, is still in theaters and has been closing in on international box office numbers of USD 700 million.
‘The Odyssey’ pirated version released online
On July 25, an anonymous account, which has now been suspended, shared a high-quality IMAX film to their account. According to Variety, a message from X’s now-defunct account (formerly Twitter) shared a high-profile link to the video, which quickly went viral. The complete film of 2 hours and 53 minutes was shared on the platform. By the time the platform took down the video and the account, it had reached nearly 2.1 million views.‘The Odyssey’ joins a long list of movies that have been pirated and downloaded online on X in the past few years. Ryan Gosling’s ‘Barbie’ was also distributed equally on the platform, along with other films including ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, and ‘Avatar 3.’ All the views, as well as the anonymous accounts that posted them online, were taken down and suspended.

Soon after the film was released online on X, the film’s distribution company and studio released an official statement. In a statement to Deadline, Universal said, “We became aware of the illegal upload of this film and immediately initiated takedown procedures. We take copyright infringement seriously and will take all reasonable steps to protect our copyright and intellectual property rights.”
Fans are concerned about ‘The Odyssey’ leaking online
Although the leak led to a worldwide audience watching Nolan’s film on X, it was quickly pulled from the platform. Taking advantage of the situation, some fans poked fun at people online by ‘Rickrolling’ them. Referring to a popular internet myth where two videos are combined to mislead viewers. While some of the slips started with the production company’s official posters from ‘The Odyssey’, the video turned to Rick Astley’s 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up.‘
‘The Odyssey’ box office numbers
Despite the high number of views online on social media, the film continues to have strong box office numbers. Sacnilk reports shared online showed that the film has already closed USD 640 million in the international box office against its total budget of USD 270 million in its first 10 days. In India, the total collection of the film stands at Rs 142.86 crore, while the total collection is Rs 119.65 crore. The film is on track to reach $700 million, with predictions that the show will soon reach $1 billion at the box office.
